The medieval keep of Esch-sur-Sûre — twelve centuries of stone above a river that never changed course.
Aerial photographs of the twelfth-century castle at Esch-sur-Sûre in the Éislek region of northern Luxembourg. The keep stands on a sandstone bluff sixty metres above the village, which sits inside one of the most complete river meanders in the country — the Sûre encloses it on three sides, leaving one road in and one road out. Photographed in June 2026 at 60–80 metres altitude.
Three perspectives of the same castle: the full precinct from altitude showing the curtain wall, keep, and river loop together; the western approach where the village rises immediately behind the walls; and the low-altitude view showing the watchtower and roofless chapel in detail. The castle dates to around 1100 and was abandoned by the seventeenth century.
