Evenings worth coming back for — a second battery as the sun drops over the UNESCO biosphere.
Aerial photographs of the De Minett biosphere reserve at dusk — Luxembourg's only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, drawn deliberately around industrial towns, decommissioned blast furnaces, and recovering forest. Photographed in June 2026 at 80 metres altitude over the former steel region of southern Luxembourg.
The dead pines visible in these frames are the slow legacy of acid rain from the furnace decades, working out of the ecosystem at their own pace. The open-cast pits nearby have become bat wintering colonies — the same tunnels dug to extract ore, abandoned and colonised without any human intervention. Three economies — Iron Age, industrial, ecological — are stacked in the same valley, each one brief in its own way.
